Journal #1/Intro Page CR

Hi. My name is Cynthia Rey and I grew up in good ole Bakersfield, California. It has a lot of agriculture and is located about 90 miles North of L.A., just over the grapevine. I attended a total of four schools, including high school and graduated from West High. I then attended Bakersfield Junior College and received my A.A. in Agriculture. From B.C. I transferred to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and majored in Animal Science. I wanted to be a Veterinarian more than anything. After three years and tons of tears later, I realized that I didn't have the heart or the stomach for this profession. Being that I've always loved reading and writing, I changed my major to English, and graduated with my B.A. I never wanted to be a teacher but it runs in my family and I guess I finally came around, and now I'm super excited.

As far as technology goes, I thought I was doing okay till I started this class. I feel clueless. I know how to email and use the internet and I know some basic application, but I still feel so behind. I have actually reinstalled my system a few times and I opened up my tower and installed a network card I believe. That was kind of cool and I felt proud, but that's pretty much it. Oh, and I installed my scanner and printer and I'm pretty good with my cables. But truth be told, technology has always freightened me. I have always felt that "computer on, brain off." But I know I have to be open-minded. My sister is a successful 3rd grade teacher and she refuses to use the computer in her class. Yet she is the most requested teach. And my other sister, tells her that she has to teach her kids about technology otherwise they will be left behind. And I'm actually caught in the middle. I love that I can communicate with friends and family so easily and I do pay all my bills online. If I need any info, the internet is amazing and I download so much music you would not believe. But If I had to be without it, I do think I would be okay. So, am I looking for to integrating technology into my future classroom.....hhmmmm... do I have a choice?

In regards to the mission statement, "collaboratively transform public education by preparing thoughtful educators, is the part that speak to me most. I never realized how effective this could be. Every collaborative class exercise has been like a breakthrough for me. I am learning so much. I also love that they use "thoughtful educators." It really shows that they deeply care about our children and understand the difference that compassion can make.
